CAIAG strengthen partnership with UN-SPIDER for the use of space information
On July 8-10, in Bishkek, the UN-SPIDER mission led by Hamid Mehmood and representatives of ministries, government agencies, scientific and educational organizations of the Kyrgyz Republic held consultations on the use of space information for disaster risk management and emergency response.
On July 8, Head of the Geodynamics and Georisks Department Ulan Abdybachaev and Head of the Monitoring and Data Management Department Alexander Zubovich participated in a session on policy issues and the national disaster risk management system.
Ulan Asylbekovich made a presentation on theme «Sentinel Asia platform: Using remote sensing data to assess hazards in the Central Asian region».
On July 9, the UN-SPIDER delegation visited the institute to get acquainted with research on geological threats, landslides, lake breakouts, the state of glaciers, and digital disaster early warning systems developed at CAIAG.
During the consultations, the parties prepared conclusions on strategic areas such as clarifying the roles of participants and coordination mechanisms in the field of space-based information for disaster risk management, sharing and accessing data in emergency situations, using cloud platforms, AI/machine learning, UAV, GNSS, standards, assessment, knowledge retention and dissemination of successful experiences. Based on the results of the sessions, the mission is expected to develop a training plan for specialists in the use of space information and identify possible sources of funding.
UN-SPIDER is a United Nations platform for the use of space information for emergency prevention and response. It was established by the UN General Assembly in 2006 to ensure access to space-based information for all States, international and regional organizations and to develop the capacity to use it at all stages of disaster management.
