International Conference on Glacier Preservation Held in Dushanbe from May 29 to 31, 2025
Dushanbe, Tajikistan — From May 29 to 31, 2025, the capital of Tajikistan hosted the High-Level International Conference on Glacier Preservation as part of the United Nations-declared International Year of Glacier Preservation 2025 (UN General Assembly Resolution 77/158).
The conference brought together representatives from over 55 UN member states and 70 international organizations, including high-level officials. Approximately 2,500 participants attended the event. The primary goal of the conference was to consolidate international efforts toward developing strategies for glacier protection and the sustainable management of water resources dependent on cryospheric systems.
The Central Asian Institute of Applied Geosciences (CAIAG) was represented by:

Dr. Bolot Moldobekov delivered a presentation titled “The Cryosphere of Kyrgyzstan in the Context of Climate Change”. He also served as moderator of Session 4: Responding to Cryosphere Changes in Central Asian Countries and participated in a panel discussion on “The State of Cryospheric Science and Monitoring, Education and Capacity Development, and Outlooks” during the forum “From the International Year of Glacier Preservation to the Decade of Action on Cryospheric Science, 2025–2034.”
Dr. Ryskul Usubaliev gave a presentation titled “Monitoring and Research of the Tien Shan and Pamir-Alai Glacier Systems under Climate Change Conditions”, highlighting CAIAG’s scientific contributions to the study of regional cryospheric dynamics.
Key outcomes of the conference included:
- Launch of the Global Agenda for Glaciers
- Resource mobilization for the establishment of a UN Trust Fund
- Development of recommendations for COP30
- Adoption of the Dushanbe Declaration
