CAIAG shares experience in implementing an early warning system for mudflows and floods in the Ala-Archa River basin
From November 2–4, 2026, in Almaty, Bolot Moldobekov, Co-Director of the Central Asian Institute for Applied Geosciences (CAIAG), along with department heads Alexander Zubovich and Nazgul Alybaeva, participated in the 4th Regional Experience-Sharing Workshop under the UNESCO-Adaptation Fund GLOFCA project, themed "Progress in Installing Early Warning Systems and Lessons Learned".
During the "Preparedness and Response" session, Bolot Moldobekov discussed additional measures to mitigate the risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), which were implemented in the GLOFCA project’s pilot areas. He placed particular emphasis on engaging local communities and government authorities in emergency preparedness activities, as well as conducting awareness-raising campaigns and drills.
Alexander Zubovich, Head of the "Monitoring Systems and Data Management" department, delivered a presentation titled "Early Warning System for Mudflows and Floods in the Ala-Archa River Basin."
It should be noted that this concluding workshop served as a platform for comparing experiences and evaluating the results of the GLOFCA project across Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.
