A Book about Hungarian Geographer Gyula Prinz's Exploration of the Tien Shan was Presented
On May 29, 2026, the Hungarian Embassy in Bishkek and Central Asian Institute for Applied Geosciences organized a conference dedicated to Hungarian geographer Gyula Prinz (1882-1973), who explored the Tien Shan.
Hungarian geographer, historian of science, and Honorary Director of the Hungarian Geographical Museum (Érd), Professor Dr. János Kubassek presented his book, "One Hungarian Geographer, Gyula Prinz: Scientific Results of His Travels in Central Asia in 1906 and 1909 and Their Significance in Our Time, in an Era of Climate Change".
Gyula Prinz presented data on the height of the snow line and the length of glaciers. János Kubaszek, comparing Gyula Prinz's data with recent measurements, draws attention to the rate of glacier melting over the past 120 years.
At the conference, Hungarian Ambassador to Kyrgyzstan Sándor Dórógi expressed his willingness to collaborate to deepen knowledge exchange between Kyrgyz and Hungarian scientists. Rector of Bishkek State University named after K. Karasayev Mirlan Dyldaev and Professor at AUCA and Doctor of Historical Sciences Cholpon Turdalieva also spoke. From CAIAG Meerim Akmatalieva and Tendik Konokov took part in the conference.
Conference participants discussed plans to translate Gyula Prinz's works into Russian and Kyrgyz, as well as opportunities for accessing information about Kyrgyzstan collected during his expeditions.
Sixty years after his travels, Gyula Prinz shared in an interview: "The mountain giants of Central Asia are calling me again with their icy embrace... Central Asia is in no hurry to let me go".
