The final event of the program “Adventure of Science: Women and Glaciers in Central Asia” took place in the conference hall of CAIAG

On August 30, 2025, the final event of the program “Science Adventures: Women and Glaciers in Central Asia” took place in the conference hall of CAIAG. The program was implemented by the University of Fribourg with support from Central-Asian Institute for Applied Geosciences (CAIAG).  The project focused on glacier research and empowering women in science.

Dr. Ryskul Usubaliev gave the welcome speech, highlighting the importance of studying glaciers in the context of climate change and the contribution of women scientists.

The main part of the event was the presentations by the program participants, based on the results of a seven-day expedition to the Golubin Glacier. Their projects covered:

  1. measurement of surface diffuse reflection and albedo;
  2. study of local flora;
  3. hydrological dynamics of the glacier and composition of meltwater;
  4. soil formation around the glacier.

Experts also gave invited talks.

Dr. Kanaiym Teshebaeva (CAIAG) spoke about changes in the water level of Lake Chatyrkul. She discussed possible sources of the lake’s inflow, highlighting the role of glaciers and permafrost melt. Dr. Teshebaeva also presented data on changes in the lake’s surface area based on the analysis of historical maps dating back to the 19th century.

Representatives of the Institute of Water Problems and Hydropower of the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic (NAS KR) also took part in the event. Antonina Spirova (Institute of Water Problems and Hydropower, NAS KR) presented approaches to optimizing urban irrigation in Bishkek. Her presentation focused on finding efficient ways to use water for irrigating urban green spaces, taking into account climate change and the growing demand for water.

The event concluded with a presentation by Diana Rakhmanova, who spoke about the multimedia eco-art exhibition “Song of the Glacier” recently held in Dushanbe. The exhibition, organized by the Public Foundation “Cultural Center Kuduk,” combined scientific data and artistic vision to draw public attention to glacier issues and climate change. It featured photographs, videos, installations, and other artworks highlighting the beauty and fragility of glaciers.
