Summer school on glaciers’ mass balance

In September 4-10, 2017 in Kyrgyzstan, in the framework of CICADA project (CryospherIc Climate Services for Improved ADAptation) a summer school was conducted on measuring mass balance of the glaciers and their analysis.

It included theoretical training in Bishkek (on the basis of the Central Asian Institute for Applied Geosciences) and practical classes at the Batysh Sook Glacier (the Inner Tien Shan).

Young specialists from universities, research institutes and hydromet departments of Central Asian countries (Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan) participated in the summer school. The participants were trained by highly qualified experts and professors in the field of glaciology and environmental monitoring from various universities as well as by rescue instructors from Switzerland, Russia, Norway, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan.

It should be noted that CICADA project is funded and supported by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). The project is coordinated by the Department of Geosciences of the University of Fribourg (Switzerland) on behalf of the World Glacier Monitoring Service (WGMS) and is implemented in collaboration with CAIAG and GFZ under the project implementation agreement.
